Salt & Straw – Sweet Potato Casserole

For the uniformed, Salt & Straw is one of the premier ice cream shops in these United States. I am a huge fan of everything they stand for, and their flavors are daring and fantastic to boot. Every month, they have a new batch of rotating seasonal flavors, with new additions here and there to try and push the boundries of what a traditional ice cream should have.

So for the November/Thanksgiving flavor menu (of 2018), there was one flavor that stuck out to me, and that was their Sweet Potato Casserole.

Sweet Potato Casserole Flavor Profile

The Sweet Potato Casserole is probably one of the greatest embodiments of fall that is not pumpkin spice. The mellow sweetness of the starchy sweet potato provides a gentle base for the other elements to build on top of it.

There are marshmallows, which is kind of the main sweetness that comes through in the flavor. This sweetness is then put in check by all the other ice cream elements. The sweet potato, while sweet, is more of a starch. The cinnamon, it comes in as more of a small spice to give it that thing. What’s it called? Oh yeah, flavor.

Then the nuts help the sweet potato starch to give it a little more of a more neutral base underlying contrast to the aforementioned marshmallow sweetness. But even this idea is an inherent contradiction because the pecans are covered in their own maple sugary goodness. Fortunately, the sugar is only a slight addition, and doesn’t overpower anything. It’s just a delicate addition, delivering the whole creation into the next tier of deliciousness.

Sweet Potato Casserole Conclusion

Great Thanksgiving flavor. Feels like Fall. I highly recommend it. Nuff said.
