Franklin’s Fountain – Honeycomb

The Redemption Flavor

Franklin's Fountain - Honeycomb Ice Cream ConeSo recently I talked about an interesting flavor at Franklin’s Fountain, a historical ice cream institution that has been around for close to a century. This flavor, was the Teaberry. I won’t go into the specifics of what I thought about that flavor, but if your are curious, you can read my review of it here. And in that review I might have been a little harsh. But I should note that Franklin’s Fountain- the ice cream is actually pretty darn good overall. In fact, the main flavor I  tried the day I got their was their Honeycomb. And coincidentally, it just so happens I’m reviewint that flavor now!

Honeycomb Flavor Profile

This seasonal flavor (found during late spring/early summer) features a honey based ice cream, with honey comb bits for texture, and a toffee swirl that oozes sweetness.

Well slap my face and call me Pooh Bear, because this is fucking delicious. I’m not 100% sure I’ve had better honey than this. And from Philedelphia?!? I never knew they were known for their apiaries, but I guess I’ve been fooled before. I have no idea what kind of honey they use, but it feels like I’m at a farmer’s market, and there’s just that little extra something that provides a subtle kick to the abundant sweetness coming from the honey.

I was completely smitten with this flavor for three reasons. The first, was because I hadn’t really had much else like it before. It’s rare to find a shop that’ll serve hard honey ice cream, so this element of rarity built up some exclusivity, making it taste more special.

Secondly, which is almost as important as the first, was the crunch of the honeycomb. There were actual bits of the candified comb that brought the whole thing to a higher level of deliciousness. It’s like the difference between a mint chocolate ice cream, and mint chocolate chip. The textured snap that contains a concetration of flavor (in this case, honey), helps to elevate the ice cream experience that much more.

Finally, there’s the toffee. While also sweet, it provides a unique depth that is richer and differentiated from the honey. It’s swirled throughout, so there will be pockets of concentrated sweetness that rise and fall with the twists and turns of the swirl. It’s like the difference from accelerating to 60 miles per hour, and taking a turn  45. Both exert a force on the body, but the forces pull you in different ways. And even though both come with an exhileration in the pit of your stomach, you wouldn’t call them the same. It’s these two types of accelleration playing off one another that make this flavor what it is.

Honeycomb Conclusion

Totally abuzz with positivity for this flavor. It’s everything I’d hope it’d bee. And beeyond all the tastiness from the honey, or the textured comb brittle bits, the quantities offered are really pretty huge. I mean, hive hardly seen such great PTQ ratio! All in all, I really enjoyed this flavor, and would highly recommend it to people interested in heading to Franklin’s Fountain.
