Sebastian Joe’s – Roasted Garlic Almond Chip

One of the Weirder Flavors I Ever Tried

Sebastian Joe's - Roasted Garlic Ice Cream
This picture is to show that the flavor does exist, and I’m not making this up

So I didn’t actually get a full scoop of this flavor, but I would be remiss if I didn’t include it because it is such an unusual flavor, and it left an impact on me. I really only had two samples of it when at the shop, so I didn’t get a pic of the ice cream (which is probably the real reason why I include a picture above). That said, in those two samples, I felt the full impact of the ice cream- all condensed into two small bites.

As you are probably aware if you’ve read any of my other Sebastian Joe’s reviews, you know that I’m awfully fond of the place purely for the fact that they offer a lot of weird and unusual flavors so early in the morning. So for this flavor, I only tried it for the novelty, and even though it’s not meant to be taken super seriously, it did have a seriously potent flavor profile.

Roasted Garlic Almond Chip Ice Cream

So the Roasted Garlic Almond Chip is interesting in that it really does taste like garlic- and a potent one at that. The almonds get a little bit lost and overpowered by the garlic, but they can provide a little almond buttery taste alongside the strong seasoning. Because of this, the whole thing ends up tasting like a thick, creamy garlic bread. But not like real garlic bread like at a fancy Italian restaurant (and no, Olive Garden is not fancy Italian). This is the grocery store garlic bread that is served at potlucks and school functions. Eating this flavor tastes of forced familiarity. Like when there’s something that is trying to make it seem like it’s known you a long time, but really hasn’t, so it throws something your way that is kind of “family-esque” in the hopes of forcing a faux bond. You know, like at school function or some awkward potluck… In the end, the roasted garlic was familiar and tasted like the Italian appetizer I grew up with, but at the same time, it was trying a little too hard, and it just was a little off. It wasn’t bad, but I wouldn’t say it was great either.

From what I could tell of the ample amount of it left, many of the patrons also went for the sample, and seldom had succumbed to savoring a solid scoop. It’s more of a novelty flavor, and you know what? I respect that. Because even though the flavor was weird, it still has me talking about it to this very day. So good stuff Sebastian Joe’s. And keep up the unusual flavors!
